e-Learning Solution Programme in schools

Schools will receive tablet computers in efforts by Gauteng Education department to mend the digital divide.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and the Gauteng Department of Education announced the launch of the programme, which will distribute 88 000 tablets at schools across the province.

A primary school in a township in the south of Johannesburg was selected to be the first to experience the launch of the e-Learning Solution Programme on March 20.

The project made provision of 88 000 tablets for distribution in the next two years and connectivity in schools where these tablets would be installed, with a Gauteng Department of Education Portal that includes curriculum material based in CAPS and workshops.

“The roll-out of the e-Learning Solution has been prioritised for grades 4 to 9 and for English and Mathematics subject offerings. The project will have a significant impact on the delivery of quality and equitable education in Gauteng,” said Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.

At least 2 200 public schools are to have uncapped WiFi and 3G Internet connectivity, with the aim of addressing the digital divide by ensuring all learners are equipped with an email address and free internet access.

The multi-million rand project bought the 88 000 Huawei tablets, which are insured with short term insurance to make provision for unforeseen losses or damages. Huawei will provide support and maintenance.
