Election date proclaimed

Voter registration to close on Tuesday February 25 as President Jacob Zuma proclaims election date.

JOHANNESBURG – President Jacob Zuma has signed a proclamation setting the May 7 as the date for the National Assembly elections in the country.

The Premiers of the provinces are duly expected to issue proclamations calling and setting May 7 as the date for the Provincial Legislature elections in their respective provinces.

The Presidency stated, “The Proclamation, by the President, setting May 7 as the date of the National Assembly elections will be published in the Government Gazette on 25 February 2014.

“According to Section 24(1) of the Electoral Act, 1998, the voters’ roll will close on the day the election is proclaimed, which will be the February 25.”

Voters will need to ensure they visit the voting stations where they have registered to cast their votes.

In terms of Section 2A of the Public Holiday Act, 1994, the President has also declared the May 7 as a public holiday throughout the country.
