KUBIC encourages south youths to explore

Friends take to the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve to clean up the litter at the Nature Reserve which has residents up in arms.

When these friends from Winchester Hills read in Comaro CHRONICLE about how Thaba Ya Batswana had undertaken to develop the gateway to the south and improve the surroundings of southerners, they were inspired to explore their surroundings.

Tebogo Seete and Rendani Rabinda say that they have been living in the south for years but had not yet taken the time to really enjoy what the south of Johannesburg had to offer which is when they decided to pack a food and drink package and head to the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.

A picnic is not close to what they had in mind when they took to Mondeor with their refreshments but rather, their aim was to clean up the litter at the Nature Reserve which has residents up in arms. They say that they were excited to see the wild life available at the Reserve and although they had been to the Nature Reserve before, they had not explored it enough to encounter the horses and the buck.

“We wanted to contribute to making the south an even better place by helping to keep it clean,” said twenty four year-old Tebogo. “We also wanted to get in some Sunday exercise.”

A number of Johannesburg south go to the nature Reserve to relax with family but more importantly to keep fit by hiking up the roughage and getting a close view of the animals.

“We also come here to hike because we believe in maintaining a healthy diet but to work out. Today though, our agenda was different because it was to keep our new favourite place clean.”

The department of health recently embarked on a strategy to target specific settings for promotion of healthy living as well as fitness activities. City of Johannesburg Regional Health Manager Oupa Montsioa advised the following five steps to keeping to a healthy lifestyle.

Be Active: Walk run or dance for at least 30 minutes per day or accumulate 10 minute sessions, three times a day or five days a week.

Eat healthy foods: Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables daily. Try to eat a variety of healthy foods and drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Promote a smoke free environment: Do not smoke because smoking increases the risk of heart and respiratory disease.

Do not take alcohol and drugs, nothing good can come out of consuming these substances.

Practice safe sex: Abstain, be faithful and make sure to always use a condom every time you have sex.
