PICUP Alberton with SCRA roll sleeves to upkeep their suburb

PICUP Alberton and the South Crest Residents Association (SCRA) collaborated and combined resources to clean up a 1.5km piece of Voortrekker Road.

Project Improvement Clean Up (PICUP) Alberton and the South Crest Residents Association (SCRA) recently teamed up to clean one of the biggest entrances to Alberton at the statue on Paul Kruger Road.

They employed 23 workers for the day, with the EMPD assisting with traffic control for road safety and staying well past their end of shift to assist with traffic.

More than 20 kind-hearted South Crest community members and like-minded companies such as Astron Energy, SOG Security and Starpack, apart from contributing towards covering the workers’ rates for the day, also sponsored lunch and cold drinks.

PICUP is a non-profit company whose mission is to clean up Alberton through community-based projects. Together with SCRA, they want to ‘take hands and clean up Alberton’.

They hope to bring the entire Alberton community together through their upliftment projects and help Alberton to be the ‘great, clean and well-functioning town it used to be’.

Enhancing their suburb

“The SCRA has also taken ownership of their suburb and is responsible for fixing up potholes in South Crest, disposal of illegal advertising, maintenance of the Vlei Street park, as well as regular litter picking in their area.

They are truly the best example of what a united community can do,” explained Deidre de Carvalho of SCRA.

The clean-up started off on Paul Kruger Road and stretched all the way down to the intersection of Voortrekker Road and Ring Road East.

“This project cost PICUP Alberton and the SCRA, approximately R4 600 in labour alone. This project was one of our biggest projects to date and we can proudly say that it was a tremendous success. We cleared multiple sand-clogged storm water drains, trimmed the middle isla

Thanks to the hard work of their team, the project was a massive success.

“We want to thank the South Crest and Alberton community, as well as Alberton businesses that decided to take a stand against the lack of maintenance and donated to our cause. Thank you for being a part of the change that Alberton needs,” De Carvalho said.

They appeal to the community to donate towards their cause or to get involved in their projects.

PICUP Alberton will be running their next project in Elandshaven, Alberton and Germiston, where they will be pruning trees that will benefit the Joburg Zoo’s animals.
