MEMBERS of the public came in their great numbers to attend an annual Diabetic Open Day held at Hellenic Hall in New Redruth on November 2.

In an open Day event hosted by Dr Johanna Kok, a specialist physician, many came through to attend numerous educational slideshows about diabetes. On the day, speakers took turns in providing awareness on the disease and the day’s event had the keen audience taking part in a question and answer session.

Stalls from various organisations were put in place which afforded attendees an opportunity to be tested with testing tables and health practitioners sharing the stage.

The day consisted of a fun-filled educational programme which left the attendees informed.

About diabetes

This is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes the body does not make enough or any insulin. Glucose then stays in the blood and does not reach the cells of the body.
