GALLERY: Fallen firefighters remembered at Soweto Marathon

Firefighters Simphiwe Moropane, Mduduzi Ndlovu and Khathutshelo Muedi lost their lives while attending to a fire in the inner city.

THREE City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) firefighters ran the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon in their Bunker Gears to pay tribute to their colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty at the Bank of Lisbon building on September 5.

Firefighters Simphiwe Moropane, Mduduzi Ndlovu and Khathutshelo Muedi lost their lives while attending to a fire in the inner city, which also left eight of their colleagues injured. Two of them are still in Netcare Milpark Hospital, recovering from injuries sustained during the fire.

Nhlakanipho Khoza, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Nkosi Mzolo, kitted in full firefighting gear, took on the 42.2km marathon at Soweto’s iconic FNB Stadium on November 4.

This was also an opportunity for EMS as an organisation to alert the residents about the dangers firefighters are faced with when responding to emergencies.
