Driving Into The Eco-Future

Autodealer goes green for Earth Day

By Autodealer

Earth Day is an annual event created to celebrate the planet’s environment and raise public awareness about pollution. The day, marked on April 22, is observed worldwide with rallies, conferences, outdoor activities and service projects. Here at Autodealer we have decided to recognize a hand full of Eco friendly cars.

The first Earth Day was in 1970. The idea for Earth Day was proposed by then-Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin who, after seeing the damage done by a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, was inspired to organize a national “teach-in” that focused on educating the public about the environment. Earth Day continued to grow over the years. In 1990, it went global, and 200 million people in 141 countries participated in the event, according to the Earth Day Network. Earth Day 2000 included 5,000 environmental groups and 184 countries.

As we all know, air pollution is a big issue and it is causing great damage as well as health risks. In order to reduce this pollution car manufactures have been pushing hard to develop more environmentally friendly cars. Now we are not just talking about cars that are more fuel efficient, we are talking about cars that offer alternative forms of propulsion. One such form is electric power.

In this issue of Autodealer we have focused of a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles. Hybrids, for those who don’t quite understand are cars that use two forms of propulsion; the most common is a small petrol engine and an electric motor.

Some of the cars featured are fully electric which means that there are zero CO2 emissions or greenhouse gasses emitted while driving. Unfortunately our infrastructure does not fully support fully electric cars, however some companies have made a bold move towards rectifying this issue.

We need to be more aware of the world around us. We just can’t continue to pollute the air, the water and ground as we do. We need to start looking at the signs of our neglect, we need to start changing how we do things and the motoring industry is one of the pioneering segments looking for an alternative, a change.

Go Green For Earth Day

Here are five reasons you should switch to a hybrid

  1. Hybrid cars can produce 90 percent less pollutants than comparable non-hybrid cars.
  2. The United States government supports hybrid car ownership by allowing a tax write off. In 2005, this rebate was as high as R70,000 in some states.
  3. Hybrid cars show much lower depreciation rates than standard gasoline cars, making a hybrid car a great investment.
  4. Hybrid cars are also incredibly quiet and comfortable to drive.
  5. With a hybrid electric car, you will save 15 to 20 percent on fuel costs compared to a normal car.
