Soccer challenge winners to take home R70k

Teams will be further motivated again this year as Discovery will be rewarding the top performers.

DISCOVERY Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge, held in honour of the late Walter Sisulu, celebrates its 13th anniversary this year. The most anticipated annual festive season football tournament is set to get underway on December 1, World AIDS Day, at the world class Nike Football Centre in Soweto.

This year’s tournament will see 104 teams take to the field in their quest to be named 2015 champions. Fifty-six teams will compete in the main category, 32 teams in the u.17 category and 16 teams in the women’s category. The Safa endorsed tournament has produced most of the country’s top footballers including Kaizer Chief’s Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Kaizer Ajax Amsterdam’s Thulani Serero and Sifiso Myeni from Orlando Pirates.

“The event has become a highlight on the Gauteng soccer calendar. This is a platform where young players are afforded an opportunity to showcase their football talent and a platform where the community of Soweto can unite and enjoy brilliant grassroots football,” said head of Discovery Vitality Wellness, Dr Craig Nossel.

A wellness day and other activities such as a coaching clinic and seminars will also be rolled out in the tournament.

“Football fans in and around Soweto can brace themselves for a feast of football entertainment,” says Safa Soweto chairman, Phil Mogodi.
