Dare2Care winner donates R100k prize to AKC

The Dare2Care competition was an initiative of the AKC to raise money to continue supporting their beneficiaries.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The anonymous winner of the Dare2Care competition donated the R100 000 kitchen makeover to Abraham Kriel Childcare (AKC) on Thursday, October 15.

The Dare2Care campaign was launched in May 2015 to help raise funds towards the organisation’s annual R4.3 million budget to feed the 1 116 children and youth it cares for. By Wednesday, September 30, the competition had managed to raise R162 875 that will ensure that 220 children in residential care will be provided with all their dietary needs while 565 vulnerable children in the Soweto and Westbury communities will receive a daily cooked meal with meat, a starch and two vegetables. A further 95 young people, studying at AKC’s Emdeni Skills Development Centre, will now receive a loaf of bread in class every day and 65 to 70 pre-schoolers at AKC’s ECDC in Yeoville will receive a sandwich and small juice every day of the school week.

According to Kavitha Kalicharan, managing director of Taurus Communications, the AKC received overwhelming support from Easylife Kitchens, Pick n Pay, Samsung, Eunice Driver Photography and Revlon, who sponsored great prizes.

The Dare2Care campaign helped boost AKC’s food budget to R1.65 million, but Kavitha indicated that this leaves a balance of R2.67 million that still needs to be raised.

Although the competition is now closed, AKC still needs more people to commit to a small monthly donation. Donors who wish to become involved or to make a donation can contact Hilda du Toit at hdt@abrahamkriel.org, info@abrahamkriel.org or during office hours on 011 839 3058/60.
