BREAKING NEWS: Residents scared to name the culprits who shot and stole cables

The culprits are said to be local resident who are walking freely in the streets.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A GROUP of four men fired shots at electrical cables in Loftes Street, South Hills, on Tuesday at 02:00 and, as soon as the power tripped, cut the cables and got away with three pieces.

Residents heard gun shots, saw sparks and screamed at the four men, who paid no attention to them and simply walked away with the stolen cables — and now the community is afraid to name the culprits.

Contractors were seen by the Southern COURIER arriving at the scene to work on the poles around 11:00, but residents are not happy about the fact that the damage was caused by other local residents.

Residents have given up two names to community committee member Ursula Njoko, who is willing to share the information with the authorities, so they can arrest the suspects.

Ursula knows where one of the suspects lives and she and a couple of men went to his residence to confront him, but he was not available.

She told the COURIER that residents tried to phone City Power but could not get hold of them.

Ursula further stated that community members need to start saving the correct contact numbers and the contact details of committee members, to enable them to get help faster in future.

“I want to thank ANC’s Bev Turk, who quickly made the call for us, so that this mess can be fixed. People’s food is getting rotten because of this, while the culprits walk around freely,” she said.

Residents are also disappointed with the local Moffatview Police who, they allege, came out, but only drove up and down the street.

The Moffatview SAPS will comment shortly.
