Open water swimming star of St Martin’s School

St Martin’s is very proud of one of its pupils, Muhammad Adam, who is currently in grade 6.

ROSETTENVILLE – Muhammad has just completed his 10th and 11th Midmar Mile swim in February this year. Muhammad undertook his first Midmar Mile swim at the age of six and has since continued to swim the 1.6 km annual challenge on both race days.

Muhammad participates in an average of 15 open water events during the season (October to March). The swims range in distances from 1km to 3 kms. This past season at the age of 11 Muhammad had achieved: 29th place from 1 400 swimmers in the 13 and under age category at the Midmar Mile; 10th place in the 13 and under age category at the Dischem Sun City Swim; and 2nd or 3rd place in the 13 and under age category at the Sasol Mile, the Platinum Mile, the Bela Bela Mile and the Heia Safari challenge.

Muhammad trains throughout the year and swims an average of between eight and 10 kms per day, five days a week. Muhammad’s ambition for the coming season is to achieve a top five finish in the 13 and under age category at the Dischem Sun City swim to be held in October this year and to achieve a top 10 position in the 13 and under age category in the Midmar Mile swim to be held in February 2016.

Muhammad’s greatest desire is to accomplish the 8km swim from Robben Island to Blouberg. This would require a thee hour swim in sea waters with temperatures dropping to as low as 7°C.
