Young guns out to shoot

South African junior-welterweight champion, Warren Joubert, will defend his title against Grant Fourie.

THE crème de la crème of young Southern boxers will be back in the ring to showcase their boxing skills.

African Ring will present the Young Guns Box ‘n Dine on Thursday, July 30, at Emperors Palace.

Alberton resident and South African junior-welterweight champion, Warren Joubert, will meet Grant Fourie from the South to defend his title. Joubert has no plans of giving it up so easily on fight night as he defends his title for the first time.

Vusi Mtolo will be in Joubert’s corner as the other half of the Hot Box team. Colin Nathan is still in the USA.

Another up-and-coming star from Alberton, Dowayne Combrink, will be facing Giovanni Bushby in the middleweight division. The crowd pulling duo will meet for the third time to determine who will take home the much coveted win. Combrink will be under one of boxing’s most mature trainers, Harold Volbrecht, while Bushby has Vuyani Bungu’s greatness in his corner.

The Kevin Lerena/ Deon Coetzee SA cruiserweight title fight is already making headlines as the Jeff Ellis bill at the end of the month. Trainer Peter Smith will guide Lerena against Coetzee, who hails from the former world and SA heavy weight champion boxing family of Gerrie Coetzee. Gerrie Coetzee is Deon’s father’s cousin. Well known Nick Durandt will be in Coetzee’s corner to help him retain his belt.

The winner has a lucrative offer to fight at Ellis’ ‘Christmas Cracker’’bill in December. At this stage Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves Promotions is seeking a WBC or WBA sanction for an international title fight. “The division is very vibrant right now,” said Berman who also committed to a well deserved figure for purse money.
