Demand response by Eskom

Consumers may as well benefit from what is happening at Eskom through positive interaction and partnerships with the energy service provider.

JOHANNESBURG – Find out more about Eskom’s supplemental Demand Response Compensation Programme:

Amid daily scathing criticism of the electricity crisis affecting the country and Eskom’s approach to keeping a handle on ensuring that there is adequate power supplies for consumers, this information has gone undetected.

According to their website Eskom is constantly exploring new ways – and establishing new partnerships – to increase the reserve margin and maintain supply/demand balance on the national grid.

The aim of their partnerships and new ways constantly being explored, is for partners to assist reduce load on request and earn additional revenue.

“The Supplemental Demand Response Programme offers you an opportunity to partner with Eskom in managing the current electricity supply constraints in South Africa. 400 MW worth of potential customer loads are now being contracted to run on Eskom’s request during periods of high electricity demand,” reads the information.

Key features:

* IDM’s role is to ensure single ownership of demand side management strategies, objectives and operations throughout Eskom.

* It takes a market-driven approach to understanding and meeting consumer requirements, and provides a platform from which Eskom can collaborate with government, external stakeholders and consumers.

Central focus of the Integrated Demand Management department:

* You will receive capacity payment if scheduled to be on standby the next day between 6h00 – 21h00:

* An energy payment of R1.20 per kWh for energy not consumed.

* Notification by 15:00 to be on standby the next day.

* Minimum of 30-minute notification to reduce load.

* Maximum one 2-hour event per scheduled day.

* Maximum 150 load reduction events per annum.

* Minimum entry level of 1 MW load that can be reduced.

The contract period would be ending the period ending March 31, and should potential partners wish to participate, the following would be required: email Eskom for more information; an Eskom representative will arrange a suitable time to visit your premises to start discussions with a view to negotiate possible participation; sign a standard legal agreement with Eskom; register as an Eskom vendor to receive payments; verification of metering will be carried out to ensure that successful monitoring and communication between your metering and Eskom will be possible to enable participation in this programme.
