Marist Brothers pupils take a stand

At five weeks of pregnancy, a heartbeat has developed… Do you think it’s right to take it away? asked Marist Brother Linmeyer learners.

LINMEYER – Posters bearing strong messages were displayed by grade 9 pupils of Marist Brothers Linmeyer, as they marched to a Shell petrol station in Oakdene with a petition against abortion.

The learners passionately chanted a slogan for their campaign: “Abort Abortion!” which was done as a social responsibility project for LeadSA. “A.B.O.R.T, abort abortion, abort abortion,” chanted the group of learners as they made their way to Oak Avenue.

Their school bus was waiting on Oak Avenue to transport them to Eureka House, where they would hand over a petition to Ward 56 Region F DA Councillor Dennis Jane.

At Eureka House, Cllr Jane met with the learners, accepted the petition and had this to say: “It looks like its 15 pages of 25 names which they’ve gathered, so I think that was pretty good going.”

Cllr Jane added that from a democratic point of view, the Democratic Alliance (DA) doesn’t have a policy on abortion as they allowed for free choice. However, what the Marist Brothers group were doing was a good learning experience as they were wiser about this issue.
