JOHANNESBURG – City councillors’ positions are that of oversight and to keep the public informed on decisions officials take about their neighbourhood.
Councillors can only request assistance from officials and cannot instruct officials to do anything. This is why there is a municipal structure with a mayoral head in place who conducts their work under the municipal systems act.
It is absolutely ludicrous that councillors are under continuous attack and their private properties destroyed when they are not in any position to instruct any council official to execute any duties.
Residents must remember councillors are merely voted in to be in a monitoring position and physical attacks on the councillors will never achieve anything to expedite any service deliveries.
