Luxury vehicles found at Bassonia chop shop

A suspected hijacker leads CID detectives to big bust chop shop in Glenvista.

BASSONIA – A suspected chop shop in Bassonia on Bassroyd Drive was bust on March 7 by Johannesburg CID detectives, who raided the home acting on information received from a suspected hijacker.

CID detectives stood at one of the many parking garages of a home suspected to have been used as a chop shop for hijacked vehicles, discussing the dynamics of the case while a baby contaminated evidence.

It is unknown by the CHRONICLE who the parents or guardian of the baby were, as the little boy had free reign on the evidence, which was displayed on the ground outside the house.

The detectives were cagey about what they had discovered thus far, refusing to work with the community policing forum who had also reported to the scene to investigate what was taking place.

Luxury vehicles including a black BMW, which had traces of blood inside, a Porsche, a Mercedes and other German vehicles were found parked and stripped at the home of a man who sat watching with a smile as the baby put one of the vehicle keys taken as evidence into his mouth.

The owner of the chop shop home is likely to be charged with possession of stolen property and hijacking, amongst other charges.

β€œOn the scene we saw various high-end German motor vehicles including a Porsche, a Mercedes and BMW vehicles along with tracking equipment, car breaking implements, drugs and evidence of vehicles being stripped. One recent model of a black BMW still had fresh blood in the vehicle, we assume of a recent hijacking,” said Mike Fontes, chairman of Glenvista Policing Community Forum.

SAPS Dog Unit and detectives were also called to the scene to continue a search and investigate. Mulbarton CPF, who are instrumental in crime fighting initiatives together with Mondeor SAPS, were chased away by the detectives, who said they had no business being at the scene of the bust.

According to the neighbouring residents of the suspected cop shop, they had on numerous occasions complained to the home owner on Bassroyd Drive about the untidiness and neglected state of the outside of the home, but claim that their complaints fell on deaf ears.
