Mayweather is in town

Mayweather will be doing development clinics.

‘THE Money’ is in South Africa – confirmations by Minister Fikile Mbalula that an invite was sent to one of the world’s greatest athletes, Floyd Mayweather jnr, to grace the 2013 South African Sport Awards. The Development Visit by Floyd Mayweather is based on excellence enhancement and the promotion of the code of boxing in South Africa.

“The partnership between us and The Money Team, is about inspiring South Africa’s boxers, trainers and promoters to aim for the sky and take the world by the storm. We want to further through this Reawakening the Giant 2014 tour assist in establishing networks with global role-players in the boxing fraternity and optimise benefit from the local boxing sector,” said Minister Mbalula.

The visit has been part of the 20th Anniversary of Democracy celebrations.

The Money Team visit is coordinated in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Confederation (SASCOC), South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Supersport, Boxing SA (BSA) and South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO), as part of the National Boxing Indaba Resolution and in line with the 20th Anniversary of the democracy in South Africa.

“We have developed a visit programme, which Mayweather’s people will attend. Mayweather will be at the Bloemfontein National Training Centre as part of profiling this important sport facility with global reach. We have also, as part of the commitment, during the Baby Jake Matlala funeral rehabilitated and transformed the Dube Boxing Club into the Baby Jake Matlala Boxing Academy, later to be the mecca of boxing in the country, East London and finally in the Western Cape,” said Minister Mbalula.

Minister Mbalula stated further that The Reawakening of the Giant 2014 tour comes hot on the heels of the successful National Boxing Indaba 2013, for which the overall strategy was aimed at the revitalisation and mainstreaming of boxing in South Africa.

He wll pay visits to the Development Clinics (Bloemfontein and East London), Development Clinics (Dube Boxing Club) and Development Clinics (Cape Town) before leaving for the United States on January 20.

Each province will have at least 100 beneficiaries; the invites have been sent to the Boxing Clubs to be part of the Development Clinics run by Floyd Mayweather jr.

“We are excited as SASCOC to be part of the Reawakening of the Giant 2014 tour. This is a goodwill tour to assist us in the resurrection of this giant which, for some time, has been in slumberland after so much history has been invested into it,” said SASCOC President, Gideon Sam, supporting Minister Mbalula that the code has been on the ropes for many years.
