Chess maestro gets six matric distinctions

Seshan Chettiar has excelled in chess while in school, now he walks away with six distinctions as well.

GLENVISTA – The word ‘proud’ doesn’t begin to express how this teenager’s parents feel about his top achievement in Grade 12, as he managed to achieve six distinctions for subjects including Mathematics, Physical Science, Information Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, Life Orientations and English.

Eighteen-year-old Glenvista High School learner and RCL member Seshan Chettiar has been at the high school since Grade 8 and says his time there taught him a lot about life and also helped to prepare him for the milestone of completing Grade 12 with great marks.

“It was really nice and I enjoyed my time at school. We received a lot of support from the teachers and the school which is what helped a lot with my results,” said Seshan, who also added that in 2014 he will be studying Mechanical Engineering at Wits University, following in the footsteps of his older brother who is also currently studying at Wits and his father who is a Mechanical Engineer at Eskom.

Some of his other achievements during his high school career include Public Speaking, in which he has represented Glenvista High School and received a merit award. He has also excelled in sports such as chess, and participated in the 2011 A-Section Commonwealth and South African Chess Championships.
