Mandela fails history test

High expectation was reduced to bitter disappointment as ‘Mandela’ the movie played out every scene for a dragging two hours on a Friday night.

JOHANNESBURG – The biggest disappointment about the film is its mediocre attempt in representing the life of a legend.

It seemed more like any other documentary produced prior to its release. All the media hype before its release did nothing more than help cinemas make a quick buck.

While one can understand the challenge in a film such as this, it feels the producers were not interested in anything else but making money. They succeeded in their mandate, but failed miserably when zooming in on the details of Mandela’s life.

Although we may celebrate the brilliance of some of the acting, the storyline was not only feeble but lacked accuracy. As much as films will always give a summary of events, Mandela had some elementary mistakes which suggested not enough research went into the film.

A few moments of inspiration and deep emotion kept the film relevant and worth watching, however, there was not gripping episodes to fulfil the film’s full potential.

International audience would have enjoyed the film, but for most South Africans, the lack of attention on accurate history will be a total let down.
