Gibbs to play Gary Player Invitational

Former Proteas cricket star Herschelle Gibbs has joined the field for the 2013 Gary Player Invitational presented by Coca-Cola, which will be played at the Lost City Golf Course this week.

JOHANNESBURG – Gibbs forms part of a strong field of professional golfers, celebrities and businessmen who have gathered for this charity tournament from November 16 and 17.

One of the true characters of South African cricket will play alongside the likes of professional golfers Retief Goosen, Tony Johnstone, Niclas Fasth,Thomas Levet and Cheyenne Woods, as well as celebrities Anthony Anderson, Carmine Giovinazzo, Brian McFadden and Johnathan Joseph to raise funds for the Wildlands Conservation Trust and Wings and Wishes.

“I was fortunate enough to play in the 2002 Gary Player Invitational at Pecanwood. It’s been a long time since then so I’m really looking forward to this one,” said Gibbs.

“Gary is a wonderful human being. He’s a very caring and humble man. He’s achieved everything there is to achieve in golf, and he’s a true icon of the sport. It’s a privilege for me to be part of the Gary Player Invitational again. Hopefully I won’t be as nervous as the first time I played.”

Player was delighted to welcome back Gibbs to the tournament. “I am a great admirer of Herschelle and thrilled to be welcoming him back to this year’s tournament. It’s always good to see old faces back again, showing their support to raise money for our chosen beneficiaries of this great tournament.”

Unathi Msengana’s place in the field has been taken by her husband Thomas, the popular 5fm DJ known as Bad Boy T.

Unathi has been a regular competitor in the Gary Player Invitational over the years, much to the envy of her husband.

“So this year I decided to pass on my invitation to him because I was tired of hearing him complain about how lucky I was,” she said.
