Jumping to success

Kimberley Diamond Cup women's winners.

MULBARTON – Kelly Murray literally jumped to success when she walked away with top honours at the recently held Kimberley Diamond Cup Street Skating event.

Murray received the winners cheque of R10 00 for the best Women’s Street skating champion. She pipped the field of ten to win this prestigious event. This was the first event ever organised for women in South Africa and ran together with the men’s event.

She is a keen skater using her talents from the tender age of eight years. “I have always loved the sport and used to beat the boys in some of the events,” said Kelly Murray who resides in Mulbarton. “Nowadays there is more competition and as I grew older it became more difficult. That is why I watch what the men are doing and try out some of their stunts. This is a wonderful thing that women can compete in in their own category and I am sure the number of skaters will grow.”

She had to stop skating for about three years after breaking her ankle, but according to her she is back and enjoys the sport very much.

With her win she also managed to secure a sponsor which will help to further her career.
