Trees chopped down in Mondeor

Angry residents are not happy with City Parks.

MONDEOR: A resident of Mondeor is furious that City Parks have once again been out and about in Mondeor, Boswell and Brabazon streets particularly, destroying trees and having no regard for nature.

“I’m appalled this has happened yet again. Last year it was exactly the same when City Park’s teams came out and chopped the trees down.

“There is no regard for birds, bees, shade, beauty and oxygen, not forgetting how long it takes for these trees to grow!” said the angry resident.

“I have contacted City Parks and told them they are inconsistent in trimming/ cutting trees. My neighbour and I saw they left a few Syringa trees, which we have seen harbour criminals who climb the trees, gaining access in to our properties. They weren’t bothered about cutting those trees down. I don’t mind being criticised but really, I can’t stand the inconsistent behaviour by City Parks.

“In the northern suburbs trees are cut back around the electrical wires but no, not here in the South. Here they are literally chopped down. It’s an absolute disgrace!”

Willem van der Merwe, from the Service Monitoring Unit for City Parks, said, “An ad-hoc monitoring inspection of tree pruning along Boswell Street in Mondeor was carried out on October 16. The inspection was informed by concerned residents who reside along Boswell Street. Pruning of trees along these streets was observed as well as executed. The challenge within this region is the lack of knowledge on how trees are pruned on different occasions. It is therefore requested by our unit to do some awareness on what is the organisation’s responsibility of how trees are pruned when there is an electric cable. The method used is called topping, as the electrical lines above the trees should be kept clear of any disturbance.”

“I don’t know how the spokesperson can say residents complained, because I live here and have spoken to other residents and none of them wanted the trees hacking down,” concluded the Mondeor resident.
