JMPD warns motorists not to drink and drive

The JMPD's recent actions send a clear message: drunk driving will not be tolerated in Johannesburg, as 248 people were arrested between October 16 and 22.

The JMPD issued a strong plea for consideration towards fellow road users, emphasising the grave consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Superintendent Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson said the statistics from October 16 to 22 reveal a concerning reality as JMPD officers apprehended 248 individuals for driving under the influence (exceeding the legal limit of 0.24mg/l).

“These arrests are a sobering reminder of the continuing prevalence of intoxicated driving in our city.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal but also an incredibly dangerous act, with a significant risk to the safety of all road users. The impact of such reckless behaviour cannot be overstated, as it can result in devastating consequences, including accidents, injuries, and loss of life.

“We are committed to ensuring road safety, and this recent crackdown on drunk driving is part of an effort to make Johannesburg’s roads safer for everyone.

“Law enforcement agencies across the globe have long recognised the dangers of driving while impaired, and they are constantly working to reduce the incidence of such behaviour through rigorous enforcement of traffic laws.

“The consequences of being caught driving under the influence may include fines, licence suspension, and imprisonment. However, the most significant consequences are the potential harm intoxicated drivers can cause to themselves and others. Accidents involving drunk driving are entirely preventable.

“It is the responsibility of every motorist to make safer choices,” said Fihla.

To ensure the safety of all road users, the JMPD encourages these responsible actions:

1. If you plan to consume alcohol, arrange for a designated driver who will not drink.

2. Take advantage of public transport or ridesharing services to avoid driving under the influence.

3. If you anticipate consuming alcohol, plan your transportation in advance, ensuring a safe way home.

4. Encourage friends and family to make responsible choices and intervene if they consider driving under the influence.

5. If you encounter a driver you suspect is impaired, report them to the authorities immediately.
