WATCH: Alberton High’s inaugural friendly game makes history

Alberton High School’s The Blues hosted their first football fixture on their fields on September 12.

Shortly after officially introducing football at the school, Alberton High School’s The Blues hosted their first football fixture when they took on Waterstone College.

The inaugural friendly game, which saw the school’s junior and senior sides take to the pitch, started a relationship with Waterstone College and was the first time learners saw the players show off their skills.

The world’s most prominent ball game was welcomed with excitement and expectation. Learners from the school saw the U15s and the first team make history, with both schools reigning supreme.

Both teams levelled, with an impressive score of 2-2 for the U15s and 1-1 for the first teams.

Francois Swanepoel, the head of sports at Alberton High School, said the friendship cup was a success.

“I thank Waterstone College for accepting our invitation to play with us. This is the first time in 50-odd years that Alberton High staged an official soccer match against another opponent on our own grounds. This will, hopefully, be a long tradition going forward,” he said.

He said they still had more games coming up with other schools.

Gavin Andrew, the head of football at Waterstone College, said, “I think it’s a wonderful initiative from the school. It’s important that they’re involved in football because they’re in a football-oriented community. You can see from the players in the field that many probably play in the community or at a club.”

He reiterated that the school was passionate about the game and that this would create a lot of interest, thus putting the school on the map.
