Joburg residents urged to fill containers ahead of shutdown

There will be stationary tankers at hospitals, clinics, municipal offices, schools and police stations.

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, Jack Sekwaila, called on Johannesburg residents to fill their containers in time for the Rand Water shutdown.

Rand Water’s planned water shutdown will affect several areas across Johannesburg. The shutdown will be from 19:00 on July 11 to July 14 at 05:00.

The purpose of the shutdown is to provide a window for maintenance that cannot happen while the plant is operational. This will assist in upgrading the infrastructure, keep it functioning optimally and improve its reliability.

“We encourage affected residents to fill their empty containers two days before the shutdown. Residents are requested not to begin storing water only a day before the shutdown. Storing water earlier would reduce the impact on Johannesburg water reservoirs and towers,” said Sekwaila.

Once the supply is restored, the water supply recovery could take five to 14 days.

“We assure the residents of the City of Joburg that during the shutdown, Johannesburg Water will provide stationary tankers at hospitals, clinics, municipal offices, schools and police stations. There will also be mobile tankers in all affected areas until the water supply is fully restored,” said Sekwaila.
