For many, the festive season is a time to unwind and celebrate, but it is also a time when financial stress and family issues are brought to the forefront, leading to an increase in anxiety, depression, loneliness, and domestic violence fuelled by alcohol.

Suicide rates may rise as a result of issues such as these and others. This is why the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) operates toll-free helplines 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout December, including Christmas and New Year’s Day, to assist the thousands of people who require support, counselling, and crisis intervention during this difficult time.

Cassey Chambers, operations director of SADAG, said over 250 dedicated volunteers and the generous donations of kind individuals, patients, and corporate donors make this possible.

“Among other costs, these donations are critical to helping pay for the telephone bill which SADAG covers for all the calls that come through our toll-free suicide helpline. We are facing high call volumes brought on by financial stress caused by inflation, unemployment, depression, anxiety and trauma, and so many people feel like it is all just too much.

“Our service is a critical intervention that is constantly needed due to the shortage of mental health resources in the country, and with over 3 000 calls per day, the demand for our services is growing each month,” said Chambers.

Please remember SADAG when giving this festive season. Your contributions do not go unnoticed and we are so grateful to everyone who supports us to help more people.
