The 95th edition of the Comrades Marathon recently took place after a two-year-long hiatus due to Covid-19.

Among the 15 000 runners who took on the extremely challenging 90km down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban were 20 members of Alberton Athletic Club, including novices Khulekani Ndhlovu, Syann Long, David de Freitas, Darius van der Schyf and Anton Ferreira.

Ernest du Toit finished the race in a superb time of eight hours and two seconds, while club legend Michael Brandon-Kirby finished in eight hours and 13 seconds. It was an emotional moment for Michael, who completed the race for the 20th time, securing his double-green number.

Lida Botha finished the women’s division in nine hours 14 minutes, improving more than an hour on her previous best time.

Anton Ferreira was the first novice to reach the finish line in eight hours and 23 minutes, while Paulus Jacobs achieved his permanent number after completing his 10th race.

It has been confirmed that Comrades 2023 will take place on June 11, and it will once again be a down run.
