WATCH: South Rand Hospital celebrates Heritage Day

South Rand Hospital staff demonstrated their cultures and heritage by showcasing music, dance, food and traditional attire on 23 September.

Staff from the South Rand Hospital, based in the south of Johannesburg, dressed in their traditional cultural clothing and embraced their heritage.

The hospital’s Heritage Day Bring and Share event saw doctors, nurses and hospital staff coming together to celebrate their different cultures and heritages.

“The event aimed to share and display various cultures, clothing, food, stories and traditions,” said Dr Maebe Ledwaba.

The event was a great success with everyone dancing and sharing and enjoying each other’s food and traditional attire.

Ledwaba detailed the importance of remembering one’s heritage. “We need to recognise that our ideas of what heritage is and the purpose it serves are surely selective; heritage always serves a deliberate purpose in the present, whether tourism, social cohesion or political grandstanding.

“This is a celebration, not only of the past but of the contributions of the South African people in making the country what it is today,” said Ledwaba.

Thabiso Phoka, who is a staff member at the hospital, said: “Today I am dressed in my seSotho attire, most people thought I am Zulu.”

Dr Mapipa, dressed in her isiXhosa attire, said: Today I am happy because I get to see all my colleagues’ cultures and I get to taste a variety of different cultural food.”

Ledwaba thanked Metropolitan and Old Mutual for sponsoring the event.

They ended the day’s celebrations with song and dance while embracing the diversity of their workplace.
