Mayor Phalatse promises the election of the speaker at the next sitting

Former speaker Vasco da Gama was removed during a vote of no confidence.

The City of Johannesburg ecosystem made up of the executive, council, core administration and municipal entities will continue to work in service of the six-million residents of the city, despite a motion of no confidence in the speaker creating a vacancy.

The Johannesburg Council does not have a deputy speaker, therefore, the secretary of the council is charged with the functions and operations of the city’s legislature.

Executive mayor, Mpho Phalatse, said a speaker of the council will be elected at the next sitting of the council or as soon as reasonably possible.

”Council has an important role in passing legislation and practising oversight on the executive. Therefore, in terms of the Mayoral Priority six, which speaks to establishing a well-run city, we will act with careful haste to elect a speaker from among the members of the council to restabilise the city’s legislative arm.

“It must be noted that the intention of our political opponents to table a motion of no confidence in the executive mayor at the next council sitting is an attempt to gain access to funds meant for the delivery of services. It also comes as a response to the announcement by the MMC for group corporate services, Leah Knott, that lifestyle audits will be conducted on all councillors and senior managers.

“This a government at work and it scares our opponents that residents are seeing and feeling a different city. The repair and rebuild of Joburg are happening,” she said.
