Central Gauteng Athletics hosts successful cross country league

At least 1 000 athletes recently took part in the sixth league of cross country ahead of the championships.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the sixth league of the 2022 Cross Country season on July 16 at Alberton Dam.

The league saw athletes willing to compete and prepare for the CGA Cross Country Championships on August 20 at Kagiso Sports Complex.

The day which saw over 1 000 athletes take part, was described as a productive and energetic day.

According to Providence Siziba of Central Gauteng Athletics, the first event of the day consisted of U8 boys and girls running a one-kilometre race.

“Baswabile Molobela was first in the girls’ category and Junior Mwa first in the boys’ category. Dipuo Mashamaite, Simone Adams and Khanyisile Thwala, all from UJ Athletics Club, dominated the two-kilometre senior women’s event. This was a clear indication that there is lots of talent and a bright future for CGA cross country,” she said.

Another highlight of the day was U17 boys in the six km race which saw Johannes Morepe running an impressive time to claim gold.

Siziba said much focus was on the four-kilometre senior men’s event which had exceptional performances. Nicholas Seoposengwe took the first position.

“There is only one league remaining for the season before the 2022 championships taking place on August 20.

CGA selection criteria for cross country championships state that an athlete must run any three of the five leagues to be considered for the provincial championships,” she explained.
