Hiking the fifth wave

Amid rumours of the fifth Covid-19 wave, 83 people celebrated Workers’ Day on May 1 at Melville Koppies.

Some did the challenging first Sunday of the month guided 8km hike while others chose the other options like a self-guided 3km heritage trail, a self-guided 5km hike, or a guided tour where they learned about the history and how different living organisms interact on the koppies.

Others took a chilled self-guided walk along with the extensive network of paths.

Melville Koppies is open between 08:00 and 11:30 every Sunday.

Wits students are enjoying a day out.

Entrance costs R80 per adult and R40 per child. Seasonal tickets are available a the year at R500 per person, but it is not transferable.

The income is mainly used for the maintenance of the Koppies as they need to raise R22 000 each month.
