Raising awareness and testing in Bellavista

Joined by volunteers from Red Cross South Africa and a local councillor the group split up into teams to conduct interviews with the residents of the area asking if they exhibit any symptoms related to Covid-19.

The Environmental Health Department of the City of Johannesburg conducted screening interviews in an area of Bellavista on May 8.

According to Vincent Mbhaga, an environmental health practitioner from Ward 55 and one of the organisers of the day’s activities, the decision was taken to conduct the campaign in the area after identifying it as an area with many vulnerable people.

Temperature checks were done as part of the day’s screenings.

Joined by volunteers from Red Cross South Africa and a local councillor the group split up into teams to conduct interviews with the residents of the area asking if they exhibit any symptoms related to Covid-19.

A testing station was on standby at the Bellavista Clinic should any person exhibit any symptoms. While conducting the interviews the groups also raised awareness regarding the virus and the safety measures that should be taken to help prevent the spread.

Interviews were done with residents to identify any symptoms.

The groups provided the residents they interviewed with hand sanitiser they can keep at home.

“If we show them how to wash their hands we also need to supply them with what they need to wash it with,” said Vincent.

He thanked the various role players that assisted by donating the hand sanitiser for the campaign.

Families were provided with hand sanitiser to ensure proper care is taken.
