Everyone is doing their bit

"We are doing our best to give assistance to all," said Marais.

Ward 54 councillor Stuart Marais wants to thank everyone who has assisted the community during the lockdown period.

He said they have had a very productive eight weeks during lockdown.

“We have amazing people in our ward and in the South who have stepped up to assist. “I have, to date, 273 people who have reached out to me for assistance with food.

I need to state at the onset that feeding the community is the responsibility of the social development department, not that of the councillor.“However, with the veggie parcels received from social development plus the extras received we have done amazingly well.

“Thanks to Xavier Street SPAR for their input, as well as the Muslim Community, and hampers and bread from Ward 23. We are doing our best to give assistance to all.

“We have also been assisting the pensioners in Annie Burger and Xavier Reef old age homes to get to the shops and on Sassa day. This requires a great deal of assistance as we only take one pensioner per car.“Of course, everyone has masks and sanitiser and complies with the rules as laid out,” explained Marias.

On May 1, a cable burnt out which resulted in major repairs needing to be done in Crown Gardens, Tillrae Street substation.
