Resident creates clean-up campaign

Nathan Fee recently started a Facebook page called Let’s Clean with the aim of uniting Albertonians behind the cause of curbing pollution in Alberton and surrounding areas.

Nathan Fee, a 25-year-old resident of South Hills, has created a Facebook group for community members who want to help clean up Alrode South and Johannesburg South.

The 25-year-old recently started a Facebook page called Let’s Clean with the aim of uniting Albertonians behind the cause of curbing pollution in Alberton and surrounding areas.

The Let’s Clean Facebook group attracted more than 70 people immediately after being created and has grown to 143 members.

They will initially focus on Alrode South and work their way through to Regents Park.

They will begin by cleaning up local parks and veld areas and gradually work their way into the suburbs.

“A lot of people sit and complain about the trash, but no one wants to pick it up,” Fee said.

“I have been talking about starting this group for some time now, but then I would be worried about not getting enough support.

“But I realised that even if I get a few people coming through that would still make a difference.”

His family owns a branding company in Alrode South that he will involve in the clean-up efforts.

“As a company that does branding, we want to make boards that will discourage people from illegal dumping.

“We want to leave a mark around Alrode and South of Johannesburg and move into other areas.

“Maybe eventually this will be a Johannesburg clean-up and not just the Alrode/Johannesburg South clean-up,” he said.

Their first clean-up

Fee will be hosting his first clean-up project in Alrode South on December 7 from 9am till 4pm and the community is invited to join them. Only people 16 years and older may join.

The veld in which they will start has turned into a dumping ground and is filled with rubble, burnt rubbish and litter.

To make the clean-up a success, The Impressed Worx has offered their work bakkies to help clear the rubbish.

They will also be sponsoring rubber gloves and trash pickers.

Crest Safety Supplies, a Glenvista-based company, has also sponsored 1 000 refuse bags for the day.
