A day out to Cullinan - definitely worth the drive!

Spring arrived out of the blue and wasn’t it gorgeous? I’m not convinced winter is done with, but we can hope!

I’m just loving all the beautiful clothing coming into the stores, such stunning colours too. There won’t be anyone who can’t find their perfect item for their summer wardrobe this year. I’m pleased to see dresses are back again with flowing designs a big favourite.

Poetry has some stunning clothing “just in” with tailored and flowy items. Perfect for the office or weekend wear.

Worth the drive

Two weekends ago my friend and I drove to Cullinan to escape Joburg and what a treat it was. She’d been before so was eager to show me around and I was just as excited to see what the sleepy dorp had to offer. Was I in for a surprise!

We stopped first at the old railway station. I’m sure there hasn’t been any trains going through Cullinan for many years, but the station now houses quaint shops and a restaurant. A nursery is in the forefront which sells succulents galore.

One of the shops sold antiquated items. We were looking for “old” watering cans and the like which would fit in our gardens, but there wasn’t really anything we fancied, so left empty-handed.

Our next stop was the main street in Cullinan. I think it was Oak Avenue, and what a delight it was. The Nedbank looked like something out of an old mining town. Ummm, Julie, it was an old mining town!

There are a few guesthouses, Acorn and Dolphin Whisper, as well as The Cullinan Inn. Harrie’s Pancakes was packed. We had a browse around a few gift shops and found a stunning little shop that sells just about everything with ginger in it, Just Ginger. We tasted a delicious ginger liqueur with dark chocolate, to die for!

We found JanHarmsgat se Agterplaas, a venue which is apparently very popular for weddings, birthday celebrations, corporate functions and conferences. It’s very different, but I’m sure will appeal to many people.

Time for lunch

We walked up and down Oak Avenue trying to find the perfect spot for lunch, it was a beautifully warm day, so we wanted to be able to sit outside. We came upon As Greek As it Gets. We did think the service was a little slow at first, but honestly, once our bottle of wine arrived and we relaxed while waiting for our food, the garden and warm sunshine lulled us into a state of absolute tranquility.

We only ordered starters, aubergine with parmesan cheese and a bowl of “something delicious”, which we ate with fresh, warm pita bread. I can honestly say I’ve never tasted Greek food as good as this! The chef patron Stavros Vladislavic came out and chatted to the diners and tried to twist our arm to order a lamb dish, but we couldn’t have eaten another morsel!

I’ll most definitely pay Cullinan another visit, or two, it really was well worth the drive.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
