Booysens SAPS provides residents with tips to stay safe

SAPS issues vital tips to residents.

BOOYSENS SAPS urges members of the public to be vigilant at all times, especially at their premises.

SAPS urges the public to take note of the following safety tips:

Safety tips

• Upgrade locks if they look old and rusty.

• Replace outside light bulbs if they are not working.

• Install “eyes” from your security companies if there is an area in your gardens where criminals might be able to gain access to your premises.

• Arrange with family members to keep their valuables secure and to lock doors and windows when leaving home. It is a good practice to keep doors locked whether anyone is at home or not.

• Get to know your neighbours so that you can always ask them for assistance if something is wrong.

• Ask your neighbours to watch for suspicious activity when the house is vacant.

• Mark all your valuable property with an identifying number (preferably your ID number) to discourage theft and help law enforcement agencies identify and return lost or stolen property. This can be scratched into the goods.

• Keep your garden neat and tidy. Cut all long grass and/or branches that might make good hiding places.

• Ensure that there is good outside lighting. A spotlight that covers your yard is always helpful.

• If you have an alleyway behind your house, have some form of lighting that lights up when people walk past so that you are aware of what is happening if you are home.

• Do not leave keys under doormats or in post boxes or even in a flower bed that is next to the door.

• Do not leave things lying around in your yard that can assist a criminal to gain entrance to your house, for example, a stepladder for climbing onto the roof.

• Never leave valuable items near windows or doors.

• Emphasise the need for security to your domestic worker and ensure that they are able to use these safety measures if they have to.

• Always replace the house keys if moving to new premises.
