‘Alice In Squatter Land’ – A fund-raising event in aid of the rural Boithuto community

A FUND-RAISING event in aid of the rural Boithuto community in Jackson informal settlement was recently held at 66 Impala Road, Rispark.

This very quirky event was called ‘Alice In Squatter Land’ and was hosted by the Boithuto Community Project.

There were around 90 attendees who paid a generous amount to attend and support their cause – to build homes for the elderly people who reside in Boithuto.

WHAT A SPREAD: The food, prepared by Doppio Zero, simply stealed the show.

‘Alice in Squatter Land’ was merely a preamble fund-raiser with more events planned for 2019.

The venue was beautifully decorated, just as one would expect Wonderland to look like. Delicious gourmet food and refreshing cocktails were served. A flautist/violinist enchanted attendees with his wonderful talent, as well as DJs who played some funky tunes.

The activities included a quirky fashion show, make-up competition and a dance performance. There was also a lucky draw as well as a book promotion and art auction.

FOODIES: Maxwell Moyo, Mary Mathe, Gladman Sibanda and Lydia Madzivanyika are all from the Doppio Zero restaurant, and served delicious food, coffee and tea.

The afternoon’s MC, Gordon Barger, said: “Today, we’re here to make a difference in the lives of some people who ‘fell down a rabbit hole’, into a life that’s much like a bad dream. If everyone helps someone just a little, it will make a big difference.”

A VERY MERRY TEA PARTY: These ladies also had a great tea party together – all that was missing was the Mad Hatter and his Rabbit friend.

Tracy le Roux, the brain behind this cause, would like to thank everyone who contributed towards this event: Stageline Professional Make-Up @ 27 Red, Justin Le Roux and the two DJs for the music, the pageant ladies for their time and effort, Doppio Zero Restaurant for sponsoring some of the food, photographer Marius Henning, Marbella de Mariée for the costumes and everyone else who was involved.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES: Gordon Barger welcomed everyone and gave a lovely speech about the event and its cause.
HIGH TEA: These ladies enjoyed their morning together outside in the garden.
SHARING IS CARING: Everyone at this table enjoyed each other’s company over a wonderful cup of tea. They looked crazily quirky too.
TIME FOR TEA: With Mrs Classis Universe 2018, Rosa van Niekerk is with Melissa Coetzer.
