Use boxing to protect yourself

Self-defence classes for children and women.

WITH the high spate of human trafficking and kidnapping targeting mostly women and teenage girls, a former boxer, who is now a corporate motivational speaker and author, has decided to open a boxing club at Mondeor Hall, starting on October 9.

“I recently witnessed a lady get bundled into a car which sped off,” said Kenni Gambom former amateur boxer.

“That’s when I realised that boxing can help not only those who want to become professional boxers but also ladies and teenage girls who can defend themselves against possible rapists, kidnappers, abusive males and bullies.”

Originally from Cape Town’s Gugulethu township, where he owned a sports pub called Legends, not far from the famous Mzoli’s Eatery, Kenni Gambo was an outstanding amateur boxer at the local Luyolo Boxing Club which trained South African champions such as former junior featherweight champion Sipho Mange and South African featherweight champion, Bashew Sibaca, who also fought for the world title in Panama City.

“I would have turned professional, but we immigrated to Zimbabwe, my late dad’s county. There I trained with the famous Davel Wellings stable which included national champions Proud Kilimanjaro, Langton Schoolboy and Richard Rova.”

He said it was disappointing to find the Luyolo Boxing Club closed for 15 years when he returned to Gugulethu after many years living in Johannesburg.

“I promptly re-opened it and today, trainer Anele Mabija, has over 40 children who are off the streets. Some have even won boxing titles and toured around South Africa,” he said.

Boxing teaches discipline, restraint and increases confidence and fitness. A healthy body produces a healthy mind. At a time when many youths are caught in drug abuse and computer game addictions, belonging to a boxing club can also improve relational skills and improve health.

Mondeor Boxing will be open for training on Tuesdays between 4pm and 7pm as well as Fridays between 6pm and 9pm. All those who wish to improve their fitness, lose weight, box professionally or just learn self-defence are welcome to apply by WhatsApp 061 107 4873 or emailing info@trade-sa.biz
