Artists support Santa Shoebox

SANTA Shoebox is a children’s charity that has been collecting and distributing gifts to underprivileged children for 12 years and the project has reached 762 594 children and by 2019 the aim is to reach one million.

Carol Wright from Glenvista and her art class decorated Santa Shoeboxes last year and filled them with the required goodies and they are doing the same again this year.

“It’s such a wonderful cause and this year the deadline has been brought forward to the last weekend in September,” said Carol from Glenvista.

“So time is of the essence to get the boxes filled in time.”

These are really much more than “just” a shoebox. Each one contains eight required items – a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap and a facecloth, school supplies, a toy, sweets and an outfit of clothing. When a donor pledges a Shoebox, a promise of self-worth and fulfilled potential is made to the beneficiary child.

“The shoeboxes don’t have to contain the most expensive of everything. Visit some of the less expensive shops, such as Pep or Ackerman’s, which we did and we found lovely clothing, really well priced,” Carol added.

Drop-off point: Alberton Civic Centre, Alwyn Taljaard Avenue, New Redruth, Alberton on September 28 from 7.30pm to 5pm, September 29 from 8am to 5pm and September 30 from 9am to 2pm.
