Joburg Theatre commemorates Steve Biko in Bantu

Bantu highlights possible lessons for a new generation of South Africans and world citizens who seek to build and contribute to a more humane global society.

AS part of Heritage Month, Joburg Theatre presents Bantu, an artistic reflection on Steve Biko’s writings, his life’s legacy, and his untimely death. The show will be staged at the Fringe Theatre at Joburg Theatre from September 20 to October 5.

Bantu highlights possible lessons for a new generation of South Africans and world citizens who seek to build and contribute to a more humane global society.

“The work is composed of music and performances, with a driven cast of young South Africans who engage and reflect upon the levels of consciousness in present day South Africa,” affirmed Joburg City Theatres’ artistic director, Makhaola Ndebele.

Stephen Bantu Biko was a student leader and anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a co-founder and leader of the Black Consciousness Movement which sought to empower, conscientise and mobilise the South African black population.

Biko believed that black people had to organise independently, in order to ‘infuse the black community with a new-found pride in themselves, their efforts, their value systems, their culture, their religion and their outlook on life.’

The cast includes two-time Naledi Awards nominee Katlego ‘Kaygee’ Letsholonyana; actor, singer, dancer, performance artist and a sangoma and gay activist Albert Silindokuhle Ibokwe Khoza; pianist, rapper, composer and music producer ALPEA – born Lifa Arosi and actor Moleboheng Ignatia Shabalala. Performing artist, social activist, director, manager and teacher Ayanda Nhlangothi is the composer and musical director.

Bantu is presented in partnership with Voice of Wits (VOW) F-M and the Mail & Guardian.

As this is an empowering and nation-building showcase, a discount of 50 per cent will be offered on the first 50 tickets bought per performance to all patrons.
