City-wide clean-up campaign to be launched

This campaign will kick off on September 15, on World Clean Up Day.

GLOBAL Citizen and the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) are pleased to announce a joint partnership on a city-wide clean-up campaign to get Joburgers to take action to improve the environment, cut plastic use, and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Global Citizen’s mission is to build the largest movement of people taking action to end extreme poverty by 2030.

A Re Sebetseng, meaning “let’s work”, encourages Johannesburg residents to come out in their numbers through volunteerism and work together to turn Johannesburg into a city where residents can live, work and play in a healthy environment. This campaign will include educating global citizens about reducing plastic usage and encourage recycling waste.

Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said, “Global Citizen is so happy to be bringing Mandela 100 to Johannesburg, working with the city to promote activism within the community. Efforts like A Re Sebetseng provide opportunities for each of us to take actions which promote a healthy planet and environment, a key part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

This campaign will kick off on September 15, on World Clean Up Day. With the support of executive mayor Clr Herman Mashaba, councillors, city departments and regional offices, Johannesburg residents are encouraged to unite with the rest of the world for one goal – a cleaner world. The city will provide bags and gloves to all participants which can be collected at city walk-in centres, depots, clinics and libraries. Some lucky participants of the clean-up will stand a chance to win free tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100.

“Johannesburg is the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan area and it is expected to become a megacity – with a population in excess of 10 million people – within the next 15 years,” said Mashaba. “In a city of this size, it is essential that residents and the administration work together to maintain the urban environment. That is why we started A Re Sebetseng – to encourage residents to be part of creating the kind of city that everyone would like to live in.”

The major partners for the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 are Presenting and The Motsepe Foundation. Other major partners include House of Mandela, Johnson & Johnson, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Nedbank, Vodacom, Big Concerts, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers, Eldridge Industries and Associate Partners, HP and Microsoft. The event is taking place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on December 2 and will be headlined by Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Cassper Nyovest, D’banj, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Femi Kuti, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Usher and Wizkid.
