Mondeor Domestic Watch informs about crime issues

Poverty should never be an excuse for crime.

IN efforts to raise crime prevention awareness in and around Johannesburg South, Mondeor Domestic Watch has been active in assisting domestics and the community at large with safety tips for the past 10 years.

Each month several domestics and other members of the public meet and enjoy educative presentations by different security companies facilitated by Michelle Pelser from the Mondeor Community Policing Forum (CPF).

At a recent meeting held at the Sasol garage on the corner of Columbine Avenue and Swartgoud Street, Martin Barber from SOS Pro-Tec Sure spoke on how crime manifests in people, as well as some of the important details to look out for whenever a crime happens.

“Poverty is and should never be the cause for crime. If one is poverty stricken but has good values and a conscience, crime will never be an option,” he said.

He said criminal behaviours could be curtailed in children at a very young age as he believes everyone has a conscience which can be controlled at a very early stage of one’s life.

“We love our children and ignore what they are doing and hope they will get over it or outgrow it when they get the odd reprimand. Often parents don’t know how to make the punishment fit the crime and make sure that it doesn’t recur,” he added.

Martin said domestic watch meetings were geared towards making sure people know better.

“In such meetings, you will meet the police and you can get a referral to the right person to help you investigate a crime. Remember that police specialise in different jobs so your sector manager attending a meeting is not necessarily the right person to give you the assistance you may need to get to the bottom of a crime problem, but they will know who you should be communicating with to help you.”
