A RUPTURED water pipe in Mulbarton has flooded a resident’s home this morning, destroying the driveway, garage and backyard.
Joburg Water was working to fix the water pipe, which burst just before 2am in the pavement garden of a home owned by Shelford resident Vanessa Duncan.
Muddy water flooded Duncan’s property and garage and also led to a power trip.
The resident who expressed her frustrations over the incident said she was more worried about the short term and long term damages on her flooded property.

She said she woke up around 2am only to receive the shock of her life as her house and property were flooded.
“I tried calling the emergency number and they kept putting me on hold the whole time. It was only after several calls that officials told me people had been dispatched to assist me. However, the help only came around 8am and that’s after six hours of more water continuously flooding into my house,” Duncan said.
With the help from security officials in the area, Duncan managed to use logs and bricks to divert the water flow from her house into the front pavement until Joburg Water officials arrived for assistance.

She said it was high time municipality prioritised fixing and replacing all old pipes before they burst.
“We cannot go on like this. I know someone whose driveway was destroyed after a water pipe burst on their property and it’s been four years already and his house was never fixed.”
With her furniture scattered all over the backyard in efforts to dry it quickly, Duncan hopes someone will pay for the damage that has been inflicted on her residence.

“Outsurance will send through an assessor but I’m not yet sure if they will pay for the damages or not.”
The CHRONICLE is awaiting comment from Joburg Water.
