“We experienced an armed robbery yesterday in Os Street, Bassonia at 6am. We have seen a marked increase in residential robberies just after sunrise as residents are leaving their homes,” said Mike Fontes, chairman of Mondeor Sector 1 Crime Forum (Glenvista, Bassonia, Mulbarton, Glenanda and Liefde-en-Vrede).

“Very often in these types of robberies the dogs are poisoned the previous evening and the perps will wait in the yard for the first person to leave the house, who will then be attacked and forced to open the house for them. Families are tied up and the house ransacked and they load and steal the resident’s vehicle with the loot.

“There has been speculation that they target dustbin collection days. We can find no support for this statistically.

“The crime pattern is fairly well established and a targeted policing plan with SAPS and CPF has been implemented and we hope to make progress soon,”  added Fontes
