Media launch for Gandhi Walk

Mahendra stated Gandhi Walk was started in 1985 and has been held annually for the past 32 years.

ON Sunday, March 25, the Gandhi Walk media launch was held at Gandhi Hall, Lenasia.

Public relations officer Mahendra Modi welcomed all present and thanked them for attending, emphasising their attendance was important and helped make this event a reality.

The event was well attended by media partners, sponsors, sub walk partners and supporters.

Modi stated that the Gandhi Walk was started in 1985 and has been held annually for the past 32 years.

The 33rd Gandhi Walk will take place on Sunday, April 15, at Gandhi Hall, Extension 5, Lenasia, and the Gandhi Walk Committee hopes it will be the biggest ever, with plenty of entertainment for the whole family.

Gandhi Walk chairman Amit Parbhucharan presented the activities that will take place at the walk.

Gandhi Walk 2018 is “going green”, with emphasis on recycling, energy, waste, oxygen and water.

Green T-shirts will be handed to participants to wear and show their support.

The day’s proceedings will start with a yoga warm-up by Art of Living Foundation instructors from 8am onward for participants to stretch out and be ready to participate in the walk.

The 12km walk will commence at 9am and the 6km walk at 9.30am.

Entry tickets cost R30 each and the walk tickets can be purchased at all outlets of Computicket, online at www.gandhiwalk.org.za, Mica Lenasia and Village Bakery.

Free medical tests for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol administered by personnel from Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital will be available for all.

Members of Lenasia Cancer Society will be present to discuss and advise on cancer-related issues.

Delicious vegetarian food including biryani samoosas, chip rolls, pani puri and idli sambar will be available for purchase at reasonable prices at the food stalls.

A free variety show will begin at 11.30am and will feature Shaky Russell, SAMB, a brass band, Lemon and Lime, a party band, Michael Jackson (The Return) Tony King, a world-class comedian, Imran Q, a Bollywood sensation), Marinique Backer, of Polo Fitness Centre, acrobatic fire dancers and more.

Members of UJ Civils, students of University of Johannesburg, confirmed their support for the Earth Walk and confirmed a hydrogen-powered car assembled by UJ students will lead Gandhi Walk.

The five campaigns being supported this year are; Earth Walk, Rhino Walk, Water Walk, Walk4Women and Oupa Fats Walk. The community is invited to come and support these worthy campaigns.

This year the Gandhi Walk committee will be honouring Catherine Constantidines, the director of the SA Earth Foundation, Kiara Nirghin, a student recipient of the Google science award, and former President Nelson Mandela to commemorate his 100th anniversary.

The beneficiaries this year are Ikageng Home for the Aged, Tiba Services for the Blind and Saaberie Chishty Ambulance Services.

The last item on the presentation was the big news, President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed to participate in the 12km walk.

This was the end of an excellent presentation by Amit Parbhucharan and he was applauded by all.

The media launch ended with tea and snacks.
