The Bag Lady

They may not have everything they wish for, but they have a caring home, people who love them, and each other. It was truly magical.

It was the Christmas dinner for the staff and exco members of St Mary’s Children’s Home last Wednesday evening, and how beautiful it was.

Preceding the dinner there was entertainment by some of the children, who sang Christmassy songs such as Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is You. There’s so much misery and heartache right here under our noses, and so seeing these children perform with such enthusiasm, joy and love was absolutely wonderful. They may not have everything they wish for, but they have a caring home, people who love them, and each other. It was truly magical.

If you would like to make Christmas a little brighter for them when you shop at The Glen Shopping Centre, take a tag off the Christmas tree situated next to the customer service counter, buy a small gift, a toiletry or grocery item, wrap it in gift wrap, attach the tag and take it centre management. All gifts received will be delivered to the children’s home before Christmas to make their celebration extra special.

Two weeks…and counting! Maybe it’s the state of the South African economy but, to me, there’s really not a merry feeling at all. It’s so sad that most of us feel we have to spend money to feel happy. Make this Christmas all about family, friends and spending time together. Yes, gifts are wonderful if you can afford them, but don’t feel pressured to go into debt to buy them.

Homemade gifts are just as special, so make a batch of Christmas cookies or a scrumptious cake. Even chocolates or truffles are very easy to make and don’t cost too much. Wrap them up in cellophane and finish off with a bright bow.

Next week I’ll do a countdown to Christmas dinner, what you can make beforehand to save you getting hot under the collar and what to do on the day.

Remember, it’s not the cost of the gift – it’s the thought that counts. Shop till you drop!
