The CHRONICLE took to the streets to ask residents how they think they can make a difference during the 16 days of activism from November 25 to December 10. South Africa has one of the worst records of violence against women in the world.

MARTHA COETZER: “People need to be alert and must not be afraid to report any incidents because reporting it can save someone’s life. Others should get involved too and be instrumental in the cause.”
RONELLE OPENSHAW: “If I see anything happening I will report it to any specific authority and will not walk away. I will do something about it and everyone should do the same.”
TAMMY WILKINSON: “Awareness needs to be created. Abused women are often too afraid to speak out and something needs to be done. Maybe an anonymous chat room can be started to give women a platform and a voice.”
MARGALET WHITLEY: “Women need to stand up for themselves and stick together. If a woman is abused, she must speak out.”
