The Bag Lady

Now summer is nearly here, make sure you and your family use sun cream every day, not just when you are on holiday.

I’m so enjoying the hot temperatures and I realise I’m a sun baby! But being a sun lover can be dangerous as the sun’s rays damage our skin and prevention is definitely better than cure in this case.

Sun screen is an absolute must

Make sure you and your family wear sun cream every single day, not just when you are on holiday at the beach. When I was growing up in England I honestly can’t remember ever using a sun block, even when we did go to the beach. Well, let’s be honest: you wouldn’t think there would be a call for sun screen. However, even if you live in the UK, or Europe, sunscreen is an essential product. Here in SA it’s even more essential because of the hot weather we get. As soon as you have children, get them into a routine of having sun screen applied every morning.

Most babies and toddlers attend a day care or crèche and I’m sure the manager or owner is responsible and makes sure your child keeps out of the sun, especially between 11am and 2pm, when the rays are at their most dangerous. Even so, apply sunscreen to your little one before you take him or her out in the morning. Most children love to run around outside and their tender skin can so easily be damaged.

Apply sunscreen to your face, neck and shoulders, as well as any other exposed skin. And definitely apply it to the backs of your hands.

I’ve been looking at various sunscreens and creams in Clicks and Dis-Chem and some of you may think the products are expensive. But what should we pay to avoid getting skin cancer by wearing a good sunscreen?

Both the stores stock a wide range, at different prices and both also stock their own brands. There are sun screen creams especially for babies and toddlers, as well as for those of us who have sensitive skin. I like Eucerin SPF 50+ Sun crème for my face, and for my body Almay Sun Proetector Body Lotion SPF 30.

So, if there’s one thing you want to put on your shopping list, make sure it’s sun screen.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop (and don’t forget the sunscreen)!
