Fans gear up for Springboks vs France

Emirates Airlines Park draws the biggest crowd for test matches.

The last time the Springboks faced France in a test match at the then Ellis Park, currently Emirates Airlines Park, was in 2001 when they could not wrap up the test. The Springboks could not win any of the four test matches against France at Ellis Park and 16-years later, the national team is adamant that history should and will not repeat itself.

“We know that they are coming at us, to end off the test series on a high and are aiming to go back to France with a positive outcome,” said head coach Allister Coetzee. “ We are, however, prepared for this. We know every facet we still have to work on for a win.”

The Springboks will take on France in the last of the three tests at Emirates Airlines Park on June 24. The match starts at 5.05pm.

In the meantime, Emirates Airlines Park has drawn the largest crowd since 1993 when over 60 000 supporters crowded the then Ellis Park stadium – the biggest crowd to date for test matches played between Springboks and France in South Africa. The overall South African record for a test match is also held by this stadium when over 100 000 supporters stood, shared seats or hoisted friends and family on their shoulders in the prestigious Stadium to watch a test match between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions in 1955.

Since then a lot has changed; tickets are now a click away online at lionsrugby.computicket.com or at the Stadium Ticket Office or any Computicket outlet. Please don’t buy tickets from any other reseller as this will not be valid on the day.

The top crowd figures against France in SA Rugby history are:

1993: 60 000 (Ellis Park Stadium)

2002: 52 330 (Ellis Park Stadium)

* Ticket sales for the match this Saturday are at 52 000 with two days to go. Let’s break the record for a #SAvFRA test!

Organise a Gautrain bus, Park and Ride or Uber and sit in comfort to watch the Green and Gold in action, led by the Emirates Lions captain, Warren Whiteley.
