A mixed bag for the local lads

Alberton will face Union Rugby Club in their first league match of the season.

A-SQUARE Forklift Alberton Rugby Club played against Wanderers Rugby Club on home soil in pre-season friendly matches on Saturday, March 11, and produced mixed results before the league commences at the end of March.

The first two matches of the day saw the u.21 and third sides raise the bar and beat the visitors. The u.21 and third side held off the onslaught from Wanderers with the experience of the old men in the third XV beating a much younger Wanderers outfit 6-3. The u.21 side handled their business by bagging a 14-7 victory.

The u.19s struggled to get going, but the superior class of the Alberton youngsters turned up in the second half, running away with the match 36-19.

The second XV was definitely the match of the day – Alberton went down 17-14 in the last second when they conceded a penalty. The Alberton side set the pace for the entire match and a lapse of concentration cost them the match.

The Flagship team failed to deliver on what the junior teams promised, being beaten by a well-coached Wanderers XV. The visitors started like a house on fire and before Alberton could blink the lead was out of their reach. The eventual score was 50-13. Once the home team calmed down after the shock of the first half, they put together some great plays and managed to score a couple of tries of their own.

The club is going in the right direction, with three victories against a premier side like Wanderers, it’s a definite indication that the talent is there.

The next fixture is against old rivals Union Bulldogs, from the South, playing for the Kevin de Klerk Cup, on Friday March 31, at A-Square Forklift Alberton’s home ground.
